Skip's Last Ride Tuesday, 13 May 2008 Bruce 'Skip' Eklom Bruce 'Skip' Eklom In May 2008, Skip’s goal was to ride across America with his mates to “THE WALL” in Washington DC. Then back again to the west coast to return to Australia. A trip of 20,000 miles in the company of his mates. He saw this as the trip of a life time. One to remember and reminisce in his later years. Unfortunately, fate took control, as it does so many times in ones life. After a motorcycle accident in the USA, he had to be evacuated back to Australia. Skip's condition is not good and he is undergoing treatment in a Spinal Unit of a hospital on Brisbane's southside. Skip could really use your help right now. I personally do not know skip or any one within your organization however I was so moved by the story I had to write. What wonderful men you are to support each other as family would in this time of crisis. All veteran's are already hero's in my book however seeing this story just rammed home how truely magnificent the heart beats within your organization. Thankyou for what you have done for us as a country and most importantly thanks for pointing out what true "Mateship" is all about, it was a very humbling story!!! I saw it on the news last Friday and have been coming here every day looking for information, bu today was the first time I felt able to add an entry. Skip is an amazing person, one of he most generous people I have ever met, he has done a tremendous amount to try and improve the way our Government looks after our Veterans, not just Vietnam but all Veterans. Now is the perfect time for all of us to dig deep and help Skip when he needs it the most with our support; emotionally, physically and most important financially. I will definitely be making a donation to the appeal set up for him and I would encourage everyone else to do the same.

In case you are looking for an excuse to travel the Museum of Army Aviation Flying (MAAF) located at Oakey QLD is having a fly-in on the weekend of 18/19 Oct. this year. The Museum by itself is worth the ride up there but linked with a fly-in it should blow everyone away. Rick Bribie Island, Qld Posted on Monday, 10 March 2008 23:04 On the way to work this morning I saw a couple of bikes leaving the freedom garage at Ningi, roads had patches of wet and as they powered on the harley Vrod went down in the middle of the road I stopped and helped pick the bike up and push it to the side of the road the bike had a small dent in the tank and bent bars the rider Richard had a dislocated thumb his mate (on the yamaha) scully popped it back in for him (twice) ! as I was running late for work I hope everything is ok and hope yous have a safer trip back to the NT all the best Rick. About Us Print E-mail Sunday, 30 March 2008 The club was established to provide social and welfare support for bikers who are Vietnam Veterans. The V.V.M.C. Queensland Chapter is not only a motorcycle club, but is also recognised as an Ex-Service Organization and Welfare Group in its own right by the Dept. of Veterans’ Affairs and other various government and veteran groups. The Queensland Chapter was officially formed on 18th August, 1990 (Vietnam Veterans’ Day, also known as Long Tan Day) in Anzac Square in Brisbane and consisted of just 7 members. Today, apart from the Queensland Chapter, there are now 5 other Chapters in Queensland (Toowoomba, Central Queensland, North Queensland, Townsville and Far North Queensland) – all separate, autonomous bodies, but with a common goal. Apart from the obvious biker related activities, we are a large presence at Anzac Day and Vietnam Veterans’ Day marches and activities. To become a member of the Queensland Chapter requires two basic things. You must be a bike rider and a Vietnam Veteran. Proof of service and ownership of a bike must be produced when applying for membership. These details will be checked with the relevant authorities, before membership can commence properly. Attempts have been made by ‘wannabes’ to infiltrate the Chapter, but these have been quickly detected and sorted out. NOTE: The wearing of V.V.M.C. Colours by NON Vietnam Veterans is not permitted in the Queensland Chapter. Having the two above requirements does not automatically lead to full membership in the Chapter. There is a fairly strict and none too short, probationary or ‘Nominee’ period, during which the nominee will be required to show commitment to the Chapter and demonstrate the ability to fit in. Of course, the nominee period also acts as a deterrent to any ‘patch collectors’. The finer details of this period will be explained to any prospective new members. BackgroundLaurence Binyon The poem "For the Fallen", written by English poet Laurence Binyon (1869-1943), was first published in the Times of London on 21 September 1914, the second month of the First World War. Binyon served as a Red Cross orderly during World War I and for his work was made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor by the French Government. His poem gained further recognition when it featured at the unveiling of the London Cenotaph in 1919. In 1929 it was recited at the laying of the Inauguration Stone for the Australian War Memorial. The fourth stanza of the poem is known as The Ode, and is recited at nearly all major services of remembrance; on ANZAC Day, Remembrance Day, and on occasions of remembrance within RSL (Returned and Services League of Australia) clubs. The preceding stanza, though not accorded the same prominence as the Ode, is often recited to acknowledge the bravery of those who fought and fell so that others might enjoy peace and freedom. At the end of the war Binyon returned to the British Museum printed books department where he was in charge of Oriental prints and paintings. In 1933 he was appointed Norton professor of poetry at Harvard University. Binyon wrote several books on art, including a translation of Dante's Divine Comedy. Laurence Binyon died in 1943.
